The New York Council on Problem Gambling offers specialized training for providers of problem and compulsive gambling services and substance abuse treatment centers, mental health service providers, and other interested health care providers.
All New York Council on Problem Gambling trainings satisfy the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) requirements for Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) and Credentialed Prevention Provider (CPP) with gambling specialty designation clock hours. Our OASAS Education and Training Provider Certificate number is 0367.
All New York Council on Problem Gambling Training Institute faculty members are certified professionals with demonstrated expertise in their training area.

Adolescent Gambling & Impacts
5 hours |
Participants will learn about the major types of adolescent gambling in NYS and the risk factors affecting youth and will analyze the affect advertising has on adolescents, current research, and adolescent prevalence rates. Participants will also learn about the indicators of problem gambling among students, internet gambling and the role of parents and the school in preventing the problem. |

Internet Gambling

Participants will learn about gambling on the internet, internet and stock market gamblers, the social problems associated with internet gambling, risks of online gambling, cell phone gambling, and e-gaming. Also included in this training are the Four Basic Protocols for Responsible Interactive Gaming, Problem Gambling on the Internet its Characteristics, Prevalence, and Policy Implications. |

Problem Gambling 101

This training touches on the basics of problem gambling knowledge and education, public policy and social impact of compulsive gambling, and screening, assessment and diagnosis.

Senior Gambling-Gambling in the Golden
Years
3 hours |
Learn about the prevalence of senior gambling in New York State. Participants will gain knowledge and skills necessary to be able to identify the adverse effects of senior gambling and about services available to help those affected. In addition, participants will be able to identify how senior gambling affects society, communities, families and individuals. Participants will gain awareness of the implications of senior gambling and recognize the referral protocol in New York State. |

Part of the 30-hour training or an introduction for professionals, this training covers types of gambling venues in NYS, an educational review of types of gambling venues and objects of the game, including odds and commonly used gambling vernacular and terms. |

Problem Gambling Prevention
10 hours |
Specifically relevant for those working in the substance abuse or problem gambling prevention field, this portion of the 30-hour training will inform participants about how we can utilize research in substance abuse prevention to guide practice in gambling prevention. Topics include evidenced-based prevention approaches, strategies, and programs. Also available as a stand alone program this training has valuable tools for program planning and outreach. |

Problem/ Compulsive Gambling Knowledge and Education

Part of the 30-hour training or a stand alone program the content includes the history of gambling, definitions of gambling and compulsive gambling, the role of money, compulsive gambling prevalence rates statewide and nationally, the five types of gamblers, profiles of compulsive gamblers, progression for compulsive gamblers and their spouses, phases of compulsive gambling, review of compulsive gambling diagnosis from DSM-IV, and review of available services throughout NYS including treatment, prevention and self-help. |

Adolescent Problem
Gambling: “What’s the Deal?” 1 hour |
Appropriate for human service professionals, school personnel, parents, etc. this training is an introduction to adolescent problem gambling in NYS. Participants will learn about why gambling is particularly risky for youth, what places youth more at-risk of developing a problem, and warning signs of a problem/ compulsive gambling problem. |

Environmental Prevention Strategies for Problem Gambling
5 hours |
Learn about both the environmental factors affecting problem gambling and the strategies that can be used in prevention. Participants will analyze how the media, accessibility and lack of enforcement are influencing the issue and review specific examples of how this alcohol and other drug prevention model can be applied to problem gambling prevention. |

Problem Gambling in
Your Community: Assessing Needs, Promoting Strengths, and Developing
Relationships 3 hours |
Begin processing how to promote the problem gambling prevention program in your community. Participants will learn about the Strategic Prevention Framework and how to apply it to community level program planning while still meeting OASAS requirements. Utilize an informal planning guide, which poses questions for participants to consider about their program. |

The Risks and Consequences: Successful Problem Gambling Strategies, Tools and Resources for New York's Colleges and Universities

This training is appropriate for professionals working with college age youth or those working in the college setting. Topics covered include statistics, problem gambling warning signs, prevention on campus, diagnostic criteria, and NYS referral sources. This program also provides resources lists for further information including website links, assessment tools, books, videos and journals. |

The goal of this training is to provide the knowledge required to treat problem gamblers and their families. The curriculum includes: Knowledge and Education, Screening and Assessment, Special Populations, Co-Morbidity, Relapse Prevention and Discharge Planning, Clinical Treatment with the Problem Gambler and Clinical Treatment with Family Members of the Problem Gambler. |

Knowledge and Education of Problem and
Pathological Gambling in NYS
7.5 hours |
Part of the 60-hour course or as a stand alone program, this training will define problem gambling, types of gambling and gambling affecting New York State. Participants will learn about the types of gamblers, the pathological gambling diagnosis, Action and Escape gambling, the three phases of compulsive gambling, and unique characteristics of pathological gambling. Upon completion of the course participants will be able to profile the female and male significant others, the child of a compulsive gambler, and identify warning signs and gambling lingo. |

Clinical Treatment with Family Members
7.5 hours |
Part of the 60 hour course or as a stand alone program, this training will prepare clinicians to work with family members and significant others of the problem/ compulsive gambler. Content of the training includes signs and symptoms, dos and don’ts, key issues, managing anxiety and financial management issues. Recovery steps for the significant other, accepting compulsive gambling as an illness, bailouts, trust, guilt, resentment and anger issues are all covered as well. Learn how to help family members work on self esteem, communication, family roles, and effects of parental gambling on the child. |

Co Morbidity and Problem Gambling
7.5 hours |
Part of the 60 hour course or as a stand alone program, participants will gain knowledge and skills in identifying and addressing clients who may carry a dual diagnosis in treatment. Participants will be able to identify the prevalence of co-morbidity in gambling clients, will become familiar with screening tools utilized for identifying chemical dependency and psychiatric disorders, and gain understanding of different forms of medication that may be helpful to a pathological gambling client. |

Relapse Prevention and Planning

Part of the 60 hour course or as a stand alone program, this training provides knowledge of relapse triggers and relapse cycle for problem gamblers; incorporating spirituality into gambling-specific treatment; and orientation to Gambler’s Anonymous and other support services.

Screening and Assessment of those
Affected by Problem Gambling
7.5 hours |
Part of the 60 hour course or as a stand alone program, participants will gain knowledge and skills necessary to screen and assess those affected by problem gambling. This course will define factors influencing those seeking help, why problem gamblers initially contact for help and the provider’s role. Screening tools – SOGS, Lie/Bet Scale, and Pathological Gambling DSM Diagnostic Criteria are provided. Participants will learn about the using Gamblers Anonymous 20 Questions, GAM-ANON 20 Questions, and Psychosocial Assessments. |

Special Populations

Part of the 60 hour course or as a stand alone program, participants will learn why specific populations become gamblers, the differences among populations, consequences, recovery issues, social and physical factors, warning signs, financial action to take, myths and facts, types of gambling specific populations engage in, and how gambling behavior varies by gender. |
