Free Problem Gambling Supervision Project

 Project Background

The New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG) under contract with the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) is offering free problem gambling treatment supervision to eligible participants across New York State. The goal of this project is for the NYCPG to identify the best gambling supervision practices, select and implement supervision models, gather and analyze data, and release findings and recommendations.

Needs assessments and literature reviews were conducted to determine the importance of supervision, current practices and clinician/ supervisor needs specific to problem gambling treatment. Several areas of clinical supervision needs were identified including but not limited to, education on problem and pathological gambling in general, clinical skill development in areas such as family therapy and suicide assessment, and increased support from current supervisor on non-administrative issues.

In order to assist new problem gambling clinicians and supervisors in a variety of treatment settings throughout NYS, the New York Council on Problem Gambling will be offering a free supervision to those that are interested in pursuing or continuing their clinical experience working with problem gambling. This program will assist in further developing key clinical skill sets needed when dealing with the problem gambling client for clinicians and supervisors.  It will also assist agencies and clinicians who are providing direct problem gambling treatment but do not have a clinical supervisor who has experience providing problem gambling treatment.
